H1N1

Influenza, and H1N1 Prevention

All strains of influenza can be dangerous; however, with good infection prevention measures can help protect you and others from the H1N1 virus, and any other strains of flu. Follow the basic steps to help prevent and spread influenza:

  • Always wash your hands often and thoroughly (front and back of hands) in warm, soapy water (at least 20 seconds) or use a hand sanitizer. Hand washing, when done correctly, is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.

  • Cough and sneeze in your arm, not your hand. If you use a facial tissue, dispose of tissue as soon as possible and wash, or sanitize your hands.

  • Always keep your hands away from your face. Viruses enter your body through your nose and throat.

  • Keep common surfaces and items at home and work clean and disinfected at all times; for example, doorknobs, light switches, telephones, remote controls and keyboards—clean and disinfected.

  • Never share any drinking or eating utensils with someone else.

  • Eat healthy foods, stay physically active, and get normal rest to keep your immune system strong.

  • Talk to your health provider regarding immunization.

  • If you are sick stay home.

  • Contact a health professional if you experience severe flu-like symptoms.

People who are more at risk are:

  • Children under five years

  • Women who are pregnant

  • People with chronic conditions such as heart or kidney disease, diabetes, asthma and chronic lung disease, suppressed immune systems, neurological disorders, liver disease, blood disorders and severe obesity.

For higher risk people, In crowded situations that cannot be avoided, extra precautions should be taken such as frequent hand washing, to avoid picking up the virus. This group might also consider carrying hand sanitizer for the same purpose.
